In 2016, the Department of Zoology was introduced in Government College Jhandutta as one of the major subjects along with Botany and Chemistry. It is one of the most important departments for students graduating in life sciences. Presently, there is one Assistant Professor and one Laboratory Assistant, serving in the department. Zoology in the college is offered to UG students as an integral part of B.Sc. Medical degree (a three-year duration full-time course) affiliated with Himachal Pradesh University. The candidates are admitted based on the merit of marks obtained in the previous qualifying exam i.e. 10+2, as strictly per HPU rules.
The department follows the CBCS pattern adopted under RUSA thereby providing an opportunity for the students to choose courses from the prescribed courses comprising core, elective or skill-based courses. The student’s performance is assessed based on CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) grades. The department aims to impart the knowledge of animal science among the students by making them understand the scientific terms, facts, various phenomena and their relationship with nature. Also, the various skill enhancement and elective courses have been carefully designed to ensure the enhanced application of acquired knowledge in animal sciences. The teaching faculty members and students make their contribution towards society by learning Skill enhancement courses in Apiculture, Sericulture, Aquarium Fish Keeping, and Medical Diagnostics and by participating in various activities of Eco-Club, Red-Ribbon Club, Women Cell, Anti-Drug Cell etc. of the college. The department has a temporary zoology lab with one interactive smart board and with internet facility.
